FLAMENGO FOR FOREIGNERS - Second report (Jun 11-17 week)

Last Saturday, Jun 15, at home, Flamengo lost its first match in Brazil’s Premiere League by 4-2. midfielder Ibson scored Flamengo’s both goals in penalty kicks. Despite the bad result, Flamengo keeps the leadership of the tournament, something very good in a championship disputed in double round-robin format, with each team playing against each other home and away. Defence sector was the weak point of the team. The other sectors played well and the result may be considered unfair in the point of view of some (me included)… Now, Flamengo plays against Ipatinga, from Minas Gerais State, away. Ipatinga is just the 18th in the position chart, having recently changed its coach. Ipatinga has 5 points, 5 goals pro and 10 con. Flamengo, who is the leader of the tournament, has 13 points, 13 goals pro and 6 con.

All these matches of Brazil’s Premiere League were played either on Thursday or on Saturday, because Sunday was dedicated to the matches of 2010 World Cup Qualifiers. Brazil lost its match against Paraguay in Asuncion, with goals of the strikers Roque Santa Cruz and Cabañas, the same one who limped off Flamengo and Santos from Libertadores 2008. In Paraguay, Cabañas is simply an ordinary striker, but the Brazilians consider the fatty player as a very skillful striker.
Now, Brazil’s national squad plays against Argentina in Belo Horizonte. Argentina also had problems in its match, just tying against Ecuador in the final minutes… Some say that Brazil’s coach is in an uncomfortable position, especially after Uruguay’s 6-0 crush against Peru, which put Brazil in a never-seen 5th position in the classification chart. If the World Cup Qualifiers have finished today, Brazil would play the extra match against the winner of Asia-Oceania qualifier: something unbelievable for each and every Brazilian.

Well, my friends, I hope to bring you better news next Tuesday.

MENGOOOOOOO!!!!!
