FLAMENGO FOR FOREIGNERS - Third report (Jun 18-24 week)

Flamengo had a very important away 3-1 triumph over Ipatinga last Sunday, Jun 22, in a match valid for Brazil’s Premiere League. The first half of the match was warm, and both teams did not try many shots on goal. However, Flamengo came back to the field for the last 45 minutes focused to take back the leadership, which was temporarily lost to Minas Gerais’s Cruzeiro, who defeated Figueirense by 3-0 on Saturday.

Flamengo today’s victory showed some things…First: our squad can win both home and away… Second, with an impeccable job of our fullbacks and mid-backs – who had decisive participation in the three goals scored by the team – Flamengo had a brilliant second half, opening 2-0 in the first 20 minutes of the second half. After a clamorous mistake of our weak defender Jailton, who does not deserve to wear our beloved red & black stripped jersey, the local team scored in the 36th minute of the second half, making the final minutes of the match a little tense. However, 2002 World Cup Brazil’s 5-time-world champion Kleberson – playing as a defensive midfielder – gave final numbers to the match, scoring a beautiful goal with a powerful kick from the outer limits of the area.

Flamengo’s match today had the 7th round record of attendance. Almost 13.300 people attended the match and – obviously – Flamengo supporters (especially those ones from the neighbouring states of Espirito Santo and Bahia) were majority - with almost 75% of the attendance. That’s what I always say… wherever Flamengo plays, Flamengo plays home.

Now, Flamengo’s next match is in Recife (Pernambuco State) against Sport, who recently won Brazil’s Cup – a trophy Flamengo has won twice. Sport is currently in the 13th position in the classification chart, but they have a very skillful team. They just lost to Sao Paulo - who is the current champion of Brazil’s Premiere League - by 1-0, away, and Sao Paulo scored only during the injury time of the second half.

With such important victory, Flamengo takes back the leadership of Brazil’s Premiere League, with 16 points in 7 matches (5 winnings, 1 drawing and 1 defeat), scoring 16 goals (tournament’s most positive attack) and 7 goals con. Flamengo is the leader by the criteria of scored goals (Flamengo has 16, while Southernmost Brazil State Gremio has only 12).

Regarding Flamengo’s new outfitter, Nike complained in the Justice about Flamengo’s decision to suddenly change its outfitter. An injunction was issued in the court of Sao Paulo State in favour of Nike. However, Flamengo continues using the equipment of the new outfitter, as neither the President nor the Vice-President of the Club were in town to acknowledge receipt of the injunction. The Legal Department of the Club is working very hard on it, especially because a Club like Flamengo could not deserve the treatment that was being granted by Nike to a giant like Flamengo.

Finally, ending a weekend full of good news, Felipe Massa won France F-1 GP and assumed the leadership of the category. Since Ayrton Senna’s death – 14 years ago – a Brazilian pilot never had the pleasure of leading the F-1 championship.

MENGOOOOOOO !!!!!
